In Italy in 1902, Maria Goretti was not yet 12 years old when she was sexually assaulted by a young man. When she rejected his advances, the young man stabbed her 14 times and she became a virgin martyr. It is said that she appeared to her assailant when he was in jail, forgave him and offered him 14 lilies, one for each time that he stabbed her.
Maria was proclaimed a saint in 1950 in the presence of her mother, family, and the largest crowd ever before seen at a canonization-over half a million people. (Her assailant was also in the crowd.) She is the patron of youth, young women, purity and victims of rape. Her feast day is July 6.
