This image is a rendition of the original icon which was discovered in the fifteenth century. Painted on wood, it is said to be a copy of the original painted by Saint Luke. It shows Jesus seeing the instruments of the passion and fleeing to the comforting arms of His mother in such haste that He nearly loses a sandal. Mary’s hands are open as she gazes at her son. We are also invited to flee to her protection.
